MEET JACKIE, one of my loyal print-on-demand customers!

Jackie's wearing her first purchase from my Cafepress store,

a BOWING 24-7 fiddle shirt.

Since retiring, she's learned how to play a multitude of instruments! She even made the resonant drum and mellow sounding wooden flute shown here. My art compliments her interest in music and that keeps us both happy! Shown here, are Jackie's Fiddler of the Forest Black Shirt, Crazy Fingers Piano Tote, Drum Hooded Sweatshirt and Guitar Sweatshirt, all with vibrant batik designs.

Here's the back side of the CRAZY FINGERS Piano Tote. Yes, she plays piano too!

I like adding a different but related design to the backs of the sweatshirts and shirts!

Jackie used horsehair and feathers from her own horses and birds to decorate her drum and flute.

Somewhere in 2006, I decided to retire. I had been writing down goals every year for the past 10 years, back to the 1990’s, of what I still wanted to accomplish, once I was retired and had time to devote to my dreams. On the list, year after year, was “learn to play guitar”. I’d always wanted to play guitar. At one time in those 10 years of waiting, I purchased a Roy Clark guitar from a TV ad. There it sat, in its case, waiting for the time when I could begin lessons.

Over the past 4-5 years, beginning with guitar, I naturally had a curiosity about other stringed instruments. So I also began to explore violin, and then acquired a piano, which led to the need for piano lessons. I now have a banjo and had a lovely harp made by Dave Woodworth of Heartland Harps & Music, Zirconia, NC. Pamela Bruner painted artwork of butterflies as I requested. I'm still loving the stringed instruments very much!

I joined a drumming circle after taking a drum making class, and then had an opportunity to make a wooden flute, so I branched off into that direction as well, musically. Jam sessions have been a great way to meet other local musicians. Both drumming circles and jam sessions provide friendship, challenges and offer a place to contribute what I’ve learned. It’s very rewarding!

Over the past years, I was fortunate enough to take a full music appreciation course at Nicolet College in Rhinelander, WI and now assist WXPR, the local public radio station in producing playlists for one of the hosts.

Currently, I’m taking lessons in guitar, alternating with banjo. In addition, summer class sessions in violin and piano are on my calendar. While loving the sweet sound of mountain dulcimers, I could not resist ordering a dulcimer making kit from Cripple Creek Dulcimers, Manitou Springs, Co. This is a great project for my 85 year old dad and me to work on together!

I have a bulletin board in my tiny music room, where I log the time spent daily on practice. Also, there’s an article on my school calendar from the Campanile Conservancy for theArts, that I re-read from time to time. It says, “Practice Does Make Perfect!” Also, my little note that says simply, “What’s Standing in the Way of Your Dreams?” reminds me of what’s important to me at this stage in my life. I’ve never dreamed I would love music so much! It’s gotten me through the bad times as well as the good times. I am so fortunate to have been able to follow my dream! Jackie

Fiddle Batik to Fiddle Fabric

Creating batiks by painting layers of hot wax and dyes onto silk is one of my specialties. I find it rewarding to utilize my designs by uploading images of my batiks to print-on-demand sites. Spoonflower is a reputable print-on-demand fabric company where I offer several fabrics. The fiddle batik design above was the first in my music series. I selected a portion of this design to upload to Spoonflower. Spoonflower automatically creates a repeat pattern from my image. Customers choose from as assortment of fabric types and purchase a fat quarter or yardage.

Renee Stauffer purchased Spoonflower fabric and created these cute outfits for her kids that were in a fiddle concert. The lucky teacher received the pillow below that Renee made with the scraps.

Renee says, "It's great fabric, the outfits got tons of comments!"

I'm delighted when my art can bring joy to the lives of others!

I'm back from Mexico, where I had a great time with family and also participated in art shows. This is the first time I presented my hand dyed silk-fringed scarves. They were a hit and I'm ready to dye more!

Scarves are semi-transparent in some areas which offers a delightful look after dyeing. I use Jacquard Green Label dyes and paint the dyes onto the scarf. Love the long fringe!!

I'll have to say I was surprised!

After inspecting my surface design collections,

I've come across some repeat patterns that fit into this category.

I imagine a bathroom with a tile wall border

a one-of-a-kind end table made from tiles.

Inspiration took hold!

FIDDLE FABRIC

When Spoonflower offered FREE SWATCH DAY, it was very timely. I needed a pocket on the front of my fiddle case to house my band brochures and thought it would be fun to utilize my own fiddle batik design right on my case! Thrills! I knew Spoonflower offers fabulous upholstery fabric which would be durable on my case. After a little Photoshop work on my fiddle batik, I uploaded my new design. A week later my "FIDDLE 1" fabric swatch arrived and here's what I came up with.

I'm delighted to license 3 images for this bold 20 foot x 15 foot mural, just installed in a new (not yet opened) restaurant. If you want to see it in person, you'll have to travel to Thunder Road Steakhouse and Cantina in Albuquerque, NM. My art is accompanied Steven Johnson's "Strummin' Blues" and Michael Arnold's "Saxophone". This is a great example of combining talent, from the artists, graphic design team, manufacturing company, installation crew and new business. Teamwork works!

COLOR TRENDS 2011

As I design repeat patterns for licensing, I take into consideration Color Trends, offering colors that fit into future trends! I'm new at licensing but understand the importance of offering a wide selection of colors! Being an ocean batik artist, I'm also delighted that turquoise is shown, as I have an excellent selection of tropical blue turquoise and aqua patterns that certainly fit in!

"Linked In" has been an extremely helpful resource. 2 informational links regarding Color Trends for 2011 were posted by Alisa Adamson on Linked In and I just have to share them with you! I found both of them to be highly helpful and and affirming! I think I'm on the right track.

Dreamcatcher Lure Batik Licensed

Delightful Jesica Retzleff is the MUSKY GIRLTM! She reps Dreamcatcher Lures owned by Bill Green, along with other musky fishing gear. Jes is very enthusiastic about musky fishing and encourages women to give the exciting sport a try. While searcing the internet for musky artists, she came upon my freshwater fish art online, including my musky batiks and loved my art! Ironically, we both live in northern Wisconsin.

Hence, our connection resulted in me creating a batik design licensed to Musky Girl, LLC TM in cooperation with Bill Green.

Jes now offers T-shirts with the Magnum Dreamcatcher batik design on them . The design is unique with the lure curving around the neckline as if to appear as a necklace, along with the fishing line wording of "Dreamcatcher Lures".

RECYCLED ART by Duda

The Beaver Dam Area Arts Association presents HELLO AGAIN! RECYCLED ART at the Seippel Homestead and Center for the Arts, 1605 N. Spring Street, Beaver Dam, WI ~ May2-June13, 2010. This is an invitational show. I'm pleased to be invited to exhibit my 3D-TP Mixed Media art and offering it for sale, along with a few other recycled pieces! What is 3D-TP?

My "3D-TP" art is created from RECYCLED MATERIALS. It all started when I irresistibly saved colorful TP (toilet paper) and paper toweling which I used to blot and clean up dyes while batiking. Too gorgeous to throw away, I have recycled these vibrant papers by creating 3-dimentional art, which includes the frame! It’s rewarding to also use threads, fabric scraps, lint and unusual items that would normally end up in a circle file.

I also have some 3D-TP art available as Canvas Giclees, Paper Prints and Greeting Cards at Fine Art America.

I'm getting ready for the art show at Vida del Mar in Manzanillo, Mexico. It takes place on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2010 from 2-4pm in the OFFICE ENTRANCE. Tiles are a popular item as they can be used for COASTERS as well as incorporating them into a tile wall border or table top. Here are some examples of tiles with my tropical and OCEAN DUDES by DUDA batik designs on them. I'll be bringing a limited supply to the show but you can always find these at my Sue Duda Batik store on Cafepress.

Cafepress does a GREAT job at printing vivid colors on all their tile work! In additon, ALL my designs are available as FRAMED TILES and TILE BOXES at my Cafepress Store within all sections! ! !

Now that SPOONFLOWER offers print-on-demand fabric to the public, artist's can upload their images and make a commission. Artists must first purchase samples of the fabrics for approval. I just received my first samples and am delighted with quality of printing, the fine details of my batik art and photographic designs and timeliness in shipping!

I had my Blue Water Batik design printed on BAMBOO/Cotton Rayon, because I plan to make some sarongs for my art show in Mexico in February. It was a good choice! The fabric is soft, light and flowing, perfect for wearing in a tropical breeze!

~~~I'm excited about making sarongs from my Red Snapper Solar Batik fabric as well. I'm impressed with the way the intricate details really show up in this multi-colored design! Printed on wonderful BAMBOO/Cotton Rayon.

~~~Batik designs, Sun Rays 2 and Solar Coral on 8"x8" sample of Quilting Wt. Cotton. I love these multi-colored patterns and am thrilled that the color is so vivid!

~~My Clown Triggerfish is part of my "Ocean Dudes by Duda" Collection. These two 8"x8" samples printed superbly on Organic Cotton Sateen! The two coordinate nicely with eachother and also the Blue Water Fabric. Especially for scuba divers and ocean enthusiasts!

~~~Rich Blend and Rust Tiled are digitally altered photographs, printed onto Upholstery Wt. Cotton. This Rich Blend fabric sample is a bit darker than the online image appears. Perhaps the upholstery fabric is thicker and absorbed more of the color. There has to be some flexibility when ordering fabrics!~~~Rust Tiled turned out real neat, designed from my photo of rust on a barrel, capturing a range of rich brown tones!

~~~My Crazy Fingers Piano Batik is so popular, that I decided to create this jazzy repeat pattern. The coordinate on the left was created from my original Piano Batik. I call it Blue Notes. What do you think about using Blue Notes at Holiday time, for Christmas tree skirts, tablecloths, placements and such? Great for music enthusiasts! Both are on Quilting Wt. Cotton which picked up all the color and details!

~~~Two popular music batiks are my Fiddle and Guitar! I reworked the designs to create these fun fabrics. If you look closely, on the left image, you can see the fiddle's fingerboard, soundholes and shape, which resulted in a pretty cool pattern. Little hearts on the blue areas were a surprise bonus. :~)
On the right, a neat diamond shape resulted from the Guitar fretboard, producing a wild mirrored repeat! Both work well with denim and black! These 8"x8" samples were printed onto Quilting Wt. cotton.

With a river in our wilderness backyard, we cannot resist the serenity that kayaking offers! My Kayak BATIK offered excellent designability with exciting results! I often add less detailed coordinates to my collections to accent the wild patterns. I can picture a quilt from these patterns!

Oooooh la la! When designing this collection from my Swirlz BATIK, I became more and more delighted as I experimented. I would really like to have a matching skirt and jacket made out of this fabic, so I could wear it to my fiddle gigs. Afterall, it would blend so nice with my fiddle! (By the way, I play my Great Grandfather's fiddle which I LOVE!)

See the little square on the upper left? ...the fish fins? This collection is based on that BATIK, which is part of my OCEAN DUDES by DUDA collection. I loved the way the colors and intricate pattern turned out on the batik, so I began to experiment with reworking that design. As an ocean lover myself, my favorite is the pattern on he top with aquamarine blues and reds. Notice it's surrounded by a less detailed aqua pattern. That's my "BLUE WATER" pattern, in which I offer another complete vast collection!

Notice that many of my collections, intermingled with eachother, BLEND wonderfully together!
